The photographs in PUBLIC PLACES were made in Berlin, Germany March 2010 at various public sites: hotels, restaurants and museums. I am intrigued by the "décor" involved in designing these spaces and how this reflects the attitudes toward the prospective clientele, their cultural backgrounds and socio-economic status, determined, in part, by the nature of the establishment. There is a degree of fantasy augmenting the practicality of these facilities , offering degrees of security, comfort and distraction.
I used a point-and-shoot camera for unobtrusiveness and color film both negative and reversal. The final images were digitalized with Photoshop allowing the manipulation of color to obtain the desired transformation of the prosaic.
